Frequently asked questions

Is the SRT to VTT converter free?

Yes. No account and no credits: the file is converted in your browser and never uploaded.

What is the difference between SRT and VTT?

Both hold timed lines. SRT numbers each line and writes times with a comma (00:00:01,000); WebVTT starts with a WEBVTT header, uses a dot (00:00:01.000) and can carry positions and styles. Web players and the HTML5 track tag need VTT; most editors take either.

Can I convert VTT to SRT too?

Yes. The format is read from the file, and you can convert either way. Picking the same format cleans the file up instead: lines renumbered and broken timings left out.

Is the formatting kept?

Line breaks, bold, italic and underline are kept, since both formats understand them. Font colors, positions and speaker tags that only one format has are removed.

Which files can I convert?

SRT, VTT and plain-text files up to 10 MB, in UTF-8, UTF-16 or the older Windows encoding. The converted file is always UTF-8. You can also paste the subtitles instead of uploading.

Can I translate the VTT file too?

Yes, with the subtitle translator: upload the SRT or VTT, pick a language and check each line before you download. Subtitles use 0.2 credits a minute.
